Tuesday, March 3: I spent the evening burning more copies of the five minute sizzle reel for Lost Voices. This was for the purpose of sending the DVD with query letters for Dr. Heather Gingrich and others affected by DID that may want to be featured in this documentary. We will also give it to people who are interested in viewing or being a part of the ongoing production of the feature length of this documentary. (6-8:30pm, 2.5 hours).
Sunday, March 8: Spent the day with Shaunya and her family in order to meet them and have them feel comfortable around me. This coming week we will be filming a sibling reunion of her Aunts and Uncles for the documentary, "Black Beans and Rice." In the afternoon we had a production meeting for "Black Beans and Rice." She asked for thoughts on how to improve her treatment for the doc. We brainstormed ways to take the edge off of talking heads and present her story creatively using more visuals. We discussed specific shots and interviews that would be obtained in the next two weeks. Our goal is to get an adequate amount of footage of her Aunts and Uncles preparing food, interacting, telling stories and the whole family enjoying the reunion. This will be the first time all of her mom's siblings have come together in 35 years. Premise of "Black Beans and Rice":
Any ordinary day. An African-American has lunch with a new friend who is Caucasian. Over a dish of food, they discover that they are related. This fact teaches her that family has many of the components of a good dish: love, spice and differing parts coming together to make a whole; and she learns that, on any given day, we have more in common with each other than we ever have differences. (9:30-6pm, 8 hours).
The Week of March 9-15 (Total hrs: 11)
Wednesday, March 11: I helped Shaunya and her family set up the event. Set up the camera and talked with Shaunya about specific shots we needed to get and from where in the room and what angles. Filmed her mom's brothers and sisters interacting, serving food, eating, telling stories through out the night. We also filmed the rest of the family and their interactions with each other. It was a very festive, fun environment and I really enjoyed her family and the footage that we were able to get. I helped tear down at the end of the night and went with Shaunya to take her family from out of town back to their hotel. (4:30pm-1am, 8 hours)
Friday, March 13: We are gearing up to film more of "Lost Voices" in April. Had a pre-production meeting for Lost Voices. Discussed scheduling, individual responsibilities, how many hours a day would be ethical to shoot someone who has Dissociative Identity Disorder, further contacts that have to be made and deadlines for emails and phone calls. We also discussed what interviews we will be filming, the opening sequence, footage that we have, (8pm-11pm, 3 hours)
The Week of March 16-22 (Total: 10.5 hours)
Tuesday, March 17: Spent the morning a FVESCO looking at prices on equipment for Lost Voices and future projects. FVESCO is going out of business and selling their used equipment so we were comparing prices with other leading film/video equipment companies. Had a quick wrap up meeting afterwards. (10am-1pm, 3 hours)
Tuesday, March 17: Took a trip to Uncle George's house and filmed Shaunya's Aunt Jackie making Bahamian dishes such as kidney beans & rice, corn & okra goulash and Avocado salad. After Jackie's cooking process, Shaunya interviewed her for "Black Beans and Rice."
(6-9:30pm, 3.5 hours)
Saturday, March 21: Made phone calls and emails to coordinate scheduling for "Lost Voices" for the month of April. I contacted our funders to let them know we would be needing the money that was promised for this month and what our plans of action are for this month. I also talked with them about our ability to submit a 20 minute version to the Sundance Documentary Fund by July 2009. Continued to work on weak areas of our grant proposal for future funding. Sundance specifically asked for an international perspective on the subject. I am reading the book "Trauma and Dissociation in a Cross-Cultural Perspective". Dr. Heather Gingrich wrote a chapter in this book and we would like to interview her for our 20 minute sizzle reel. (10am-2pm, 4 hours)
The Week of March 23-29 (Total: 17.5 hours)
Saturday, March 28: Took a trip to Paige Evan's ranch and spent time with her as she finished her edit on Buckaroo. I helped her with the touches on graphics and we added some beginning title cards and restructured her ending credits. I left a copy of "Lost Voices" 5 minute sizzle reel to get her feedback and critique on the edit. She has given me a copy of one of her documentaries, Sound Waters, to watch and learn from her editing style. (1:30pm-9pm, 7.5 hours).
Sunday, March 29: Picked up the tapes and camera in the morning from Shaunya. I spent a good portion of the day capturing all of the footage that we have so far on "Black Beans and Rice." Our goal is to begin editing a sizzle reel for "Black Beans and Rice," in the next two weeks. (8:30-9:30am and 1pm-10pm, 10 hours)
